How Can I Upgrade My Backyard At A Low Cost?
DIY Upgrade In Your Backyard
The following DIY project is a budget friendly backyard upgrade. I chose to do this project because there is a lot of value in it and is fairly easy to do-it-yourself. Many people have items in their backyards that can use a simple upgrade and do not bother fixing them or cleaning them up for re-use. Instead these items are thrown away and fall apart over time. This is one of them.
This budget friendly backyard upgrade is for repainting your pergola. It is basic, semi-old and in need of repairs but it can use a small paint job while making a world of difference.
Wear And Tear Of Items
The pergola is around 10 years old or more. When we moved here the pergola was already here with a hot tub in the middle. Fortunately the owners took the hot tub away and we were left with a pergola and some empty space to play around with.
A Basic Pergola
In past gardening posts you can see what we did in the centre of the square. After years the dullness and lack lustre is showing on the wood. A mini spruce up is all it needs. It is a basic pergola, but is sufficient and therefore, valuable.
What Colour Should I Paint The Pergola?
Look At The Area Around You
Based on the location of the structure of on your land, choose the right colour for the right energy to work with. This post cannot get into this topic just yet as it is long and will be a conversation for the future. In the meantime, we did research on the location of the pergola and what colour is best suited for it and chose accordingly.
If It Is Not Broken, Fix It
There was debate to remove this pergola, but this is not the best decision. Especially in the times we are in this is a great structure to have in our backyard. It took material and labour to build it and it is in good condition. This is a solid standing structure.
It just needs some clean up, making a few adjustments and a fresh clean paint. Choosing the right day to paint has been a bit of a struggle because by the time 11am hits the sun is beaming down its heat right at us.
Slow And Steady Gets The Job Done
So we have worked on this project in increments. We first started on a Sunday morning around 10:30am and stopped at 1:30pm. We went back in the evening by 7:00pm and worked until 8:30pm. The last part we worked on the next Saturday morning from 7am-8:30am and we were done.
It took a total of 6 hours. The reason why it took longer than normal is because of the heat from the sun and the challenge of painting harder to reach areas even while standing on a ladder. There was also a lot of surface are to cover. I worked on the lower parts working my way up and my partner did the top parts, the areas I cannot reach.
Low Cost And High Value
The cost of the paint is $50.00 and we have all the tools to paint, such as a paint brush, roller, mixer, ladders etc. The difference is evident. It looks fresh and clean and is not too bright in colour. At first it seemed like the colour might be too bright. Fortunately blends with the backyard colours nicely.
What Extra Features Can Be Added To The Pergola?
A Small Change With A Big Difference
Now we can add on the lattices on the end poles of the pergola and put up our beautiful roses. The cost of one lattice is $20.00. We cut ours in half and placed each half on the ends of the pillars.
Then I raised the flowers up and tied a few with the lattice while placing some of the vines through the holes on to the other side.
Now they will rise up, grow very tall and eventually over the top of the pergola, turning this pergola into a beautiful flower filled garden. In a few years it will look lovely.
Invest In Your Investment
A simple backyard upgrade investment is a great way to build your wealth and enjoy your place while residing in it.
Clean Up Before You Grow Food
We are so happy to have made this change before planting vegetables. It looks much cleaner, newer and fresh.
In Summary-A Budget Friendly Backyard Upgrade
The colour blends in very nicely with the rest of the backyard.
