Some Sunshine Makes A Big Difference

Herbs need light, but not as much as vegetables. As long as you have a space that receives at least six hours of sunlight a day, there is hope for growth once they sprout. When you first begin, there is no need to worry about giving sunlight as the seeds have not yet sprouted. However, once they have, check on the upcoming weather. If the weather does not look good, chances to grow will take longer.

Depending on the amount of sunlight there is in your home, there is a potential for the seeds to not work out, as we are still in the month of March. Fortunately, from now up until the third week of June, the amount of light will increase and this can help your herbs grow.

Get Started Now

Growing herbs at home is a great way to enjoy flavours to enhance your meals. While it is still too early to start vegetables seedlings inside our home, an indoor garden kit for herbs like mint, oregano, basil, thyme, chives, parsley, cilantro and rosemary is a good start to get ready for Springtime.

The Following Are All The Seeds Included In An Indoor Herb Garden Kit

What you see in this kit is not all going to be planted at the same time. Additionally, not all the seeds will be planted. This is because some of them can be planted in a few more weeks, closer into spring. The second reason is because some of the herbs, such as chives and spearmint, already grow in abundance in our backyard in the summer. The herbs below are the best ones to plant now. Out of them I have planted 5 and 2 have sprouted

What Are The Best Seeds To Plant From An Indoor Herb Garden Kit?

1.  Mint

Out of all the herbs that grow on this list, mint is the easiest to grow indoors in the winter. This herb grows faster than weeds. They do not require a lot of sun but a little sunshine a day will do good for them. Mint is best used in salads, macaroni salad, making cold rolls, sandwiches, chutney, hot teas and garnish for some desserts.

Chew on a few of these leaves and it is a good breath mint as well. Although fennel seeds are a better option. I am not growing mint indoors because a lot of spearmint already grows in the backyard in the summer. It grows in abundance and it smells wonderful. Additionally cats do not come around and mark their territory in your plants.

Herbs such as mint and rosemary are also a perennial which means you only need to plant them once. This is great!

2.  Oregano

Grow oregano indoors and receive a good amount to season food. Oregano goes great in several savoury dishes such as pasta, rice dishes, casseroles, potato salad and roasted vegetables. Start to grow herbs indoors ahead of Spring before taking them out in the Summer. I recently planted some seeds and I am waiting for something to sprout.

3.  Basil

This needs some care and proper sun, but basil can grow nicely indoors as well. As long as it receives a few more hours of sun a day than what the others require, basil leaves will be available in the winter. Basil seeds are very tiny. Be careful how many you plant in the pot.

4. Thyme

Easy to care for and smelling nice inside your home, thyme is a wonderful gardening herb to grow. It needs on average two hours of sunlight a day for it to survive and therefore is not that difficult to manage. A few seeds are in the works and hopefully they sprout. As of yet they are still in the dark.

5. Chives

This is another herb that grows effortlessly and delivers an abundance. Chives are a simple herb to grow inside your home when you cannot grow anything outside. Plus chives can be used to replace onions in your food and they taste delicious in meals. Check out a garden chickpea salad, fenugreek and chives dip, as well as other recipes using chives in meals in my cookbook available on Amazon.

As previously mentioned in grow your herbs indoors, I did not intend to plant these indoors as there is a lot that grows in the summer for us. Nevertheless I tried and chives came out the fastest. Unfortunately they also wilted quickly. In our case, it is better to wait for them to come out on their own in our backyard.

6. Parsley

This wonderful herb is another useful herb to grow inside your space. It is used in meals as well as a garnish for several dishes. Growing parsley is also fairly easy and will give a good yield throughout the winter and Spring. Growing parsley indoors requires low maintenance and a little water and sunlight. Now that we have parsley seeds, once some grow, I can use fresh parsley instead of using dried all the time.

7. Cilantro

If you are eating more lentils, cilantro is a great herb to add to it.  Cilantro tastes good in so many foods. It is delicious on cooked lentils and vegetables, soups, salads, pasta sauce etc. Cilantro grows well indoors and requires 2-3 hours of sun a day. I love the taste of cilantro. It takes something from tasting just good to delicious. What it tastes like without it and how it turns out when using some is vastly better.

8. Rosemary

This is a great herb to grow indoors and I hope to see some results by the summer. Although seeds have been planted, nothing is showing up just yet, so I will keep an eye on it and probably plant a few more seeds. Rosemary is also used in many foods, although I do not use it often. It is fairly expensive for a small quantity. However, if we can grow some this year at home it will be nice to add to foods as well as other useful purposes aside from cooking. Rosemary gives off a wonderful fragrance.

What Do You Need To Start An Indoor Herb Garden?

Space To Grow

All of the herbs mentioned on the list do not take up much space. Set up a small station in your home. Give some room in your space so that you can start up an indoor herb garden kit for yourself. Enjoy building a garden inside our home.

The Importance Of Light For An Indoor Herb Garden

In areas where you do not get enough sunlight and would still like to grow herbs in your home, invest in an indoor LED grow light. This kind of lighting is helpful in growing your plants indoors.

In Summary

Start gardening in the winter with an indoor herb garden kit.  All you need is a bit of space and some natural sunlight. It is a great way to get a head start on growing herbs which always come in handy when making meals at home.
