What Are Some Backyard Ideas?
Planting A Garden
By now you have started planting your indoor garden outside. The weather has not been kind these past two weeks. Hopefully warmer temperatures kick in and what we plant this year thrives until harvest time. Here are some backyard garden ideas that will help you figure out what you want to add in your space. Throughout this post I share pictures of some of the garden ideas growing in my backyard this year.
What Did I Plant In My Backyard?
All The Things You Can Grow
Even though the past several days have been cool, on a few of the hot days mosquitos came out looking for food. I seem to taste very delicious and cannot last outside in the garden longer than 10 minutes at a time, literally. Even after wearing a full sleeved shirt and long plants, they bite right through my clothes effortlessly. I am gardening this year in small increments. There are still two areas in the backyard where I can garden a few more things. Perhaps this weekend I will finish up the remaining areas.
The Following Items Are Planted In My Backyard
So far I have been able to plant the following items. They are tomatoes, green bell peppers, cilantro, celery, butternut squash, cantaloupe, basil, strawberries, thyme, spinach, kale and more.
What Are Some Backyard Garden Ideas?
6 Backyards Garden Ideas
1. Grow Vegetables, Fruits And An Herb Garden
This is going to take up some space in your backyard so set a plan on how you wish to do this. The garden bed in my space is up against two fences to leave some space in the centre to walk. In the beds you make plant anything that is nice and will grow. In my beds lay flowers, trees, some lavender, peppermint and in the summer months a small vegetable and mint garden.
This year I have strawberries and green bell peppers planted in the ground. The strawberries were planted in 2022 and do not need to be replanted as they regrow each year. This area just needed cleaning up because there is a very large cedar tree right next to it. A lot of leaves fall from this tree.

2. Build A Structure
Build a secure structure in the back. Have something like a deck, a small greenhouse or garden bed(s), in the backyard. Depending on what you like to do in your space, build something that will look good and is practical. I have a pergola structure in the back. Originally it was used for a hot tub in the centre, but that is not my thing so turned it into a vegetable garden.
In the summer I am growing vegetables and in the winter I can use the space as a fit pit. Flowers grow on two poles of the pergola that hold the structure together. Whereas the other side hold side have two square boxes in which tomato plants are placed to grow throughout the summer.
In the centre I have planted some cilantro, green bell peppers, tomatoes, butternut squash and cantaloupe in the ground. Animals are already attacking the food and therefore it is best to get something to protect your garden. Last year I lost my cucumbers and zucchini because an animal bit into it and diseased the plant. So when you plant, be mindful that animals will come around and dig in.

3. Invest In A Shed
A Shed is so useful to have in your backyard. A shed is probably one of the first things to consider investing in when you have a backyard. This way you have whatever tools you need in the back to work efficiently. It is also a perfect storage space for your garden tools and other things that would otherwise look messy if they just lay out there.
Having a shed makes your backyard place look neat and tidy. It is amazing how much you can fit inside a regular sized shed.
4. Stone Backyard
Having a partially stone backyard looks very nice and neat. There is some stone along the side of our property and into the backyard. It creates a space between our home and the grass. On the stone you can add other outdoor items such as a patio set or a barbecue set.
Depending on the quality of stone you purchase this feature can make your property look really good and will increase the value of your home.
5. Backyard Garden Lights
Backyard garden lights will create a comfortable atmosphere in the backyard. It also helps detract animals from coming in the area when the lights are on. By adding them as part of your decor, it looks a lot better and you will be able to see properly at night. However, it is best to invest in outdoor lights after a nice backyard space has been set up. LED lights that come on as soon as it gets dark will last throughout the night and replenish from the sun the next day. They are the most economical.
6. A Private Fence
Depending on how close you are to your neighbours, your privacy is important. Having a private fence may be a good idea for you. Most fences in my city are built so that there is a little space in between them for you to see into your neighbours backyard. You do not need to buy a new fence. For example, I purchased about 20 wooden fence pieces that match my current fence. It came to $100.00. I was able to cover up one side of my fence that needed full coverage. It looks better and it is now more comfortable to be outside.
This looks like nothing but these are tomato and green bell pepper plants. Already tampered with by animals, but that is okay. I have some more. 🙂
In Summary-Backyard Garden Ideas
Backyard garden ideas can keep on going, depending on how large your space is. My space is so small and yet everything is well organized with an open space and abundant. There is everything we want, such as a variety of different flowers, two trees, plants, a pergola, a partially stone backyard, some garden beds, a shed, some privacy and more. The ideas to create a beautiful space are endless.
Hopefully this will give you some ideas on what you wish to do this year in your backyard. It does not matter how small or big it is as long as it is well taken care of.
Enjoy the summer and continuing coming up with great, cost effective backyard ideas.
