Quantity Vs. Quality
One lesson with planting seeds is that quantity is not as good as quality. Although you may plant a lot of seeds, do not expect them to all work out. Expecting gardening vegetables for beginners to be a success is a good attitude to walk in with when planting your garden. It helps motivate you to make the best quality produce, despite setbacks that come along the way.
Initially I was so impressed by the amount of tomatoes grown last year, I expected the same success in 2021. This is not the case. Tomatoes were growing strong and shooting straight up in my backyard in 2020. They grew more than six feet tall. This year, it is a little different.
Update On Starting Seeds Indoors

The overall analysis with backyard gardening is that it will not yield the exact same results each year. Some crops will be damaged and not make it through their full life cycle.
We have to factor in elements like the weather, the time you start planting, how you are starting seeds, what the quality of seeds are you are using and how much sun and water they receive.
Correct Gardening Mistakes
For any mistakes made this year, make adjustments for the next time, helping you achieve better results. Being a little too eagerI planted way more tomato seeds per pod.
As a result, be mindful to put only two seeds per pod. Not only this, once you transplant your tomato seeds into individual cups, do not keep the soil too wet. Let the soil be semi-moist. Another thing to point out is to allow each seed to grow stronger before taking it outside.
No Need To Rush
For fear that I will not plant on time, I took my tomato seeds outside when they were simply too tiny. This is why they did not survive. Out of all the seeds I planted, only five seeds are in the ground. Out of those, four of them are looking okay. One may not make it. They are also all growing very slowly, so I do not know whether anything will come of them.
This coming week the weather is expected to be hot and humid. In hot humid conditions they do well, especially since the past two days it has been raining.

We are in the first week of June. By this time last year everything was planted and growing much bigger than it is this year. Perhaps it is true, using older seeds will not grow as well. However, other factors are also at play. It is apparent that this year has come off to a much slower start. Nevertheless, keep moving forward as there is no quitting.

After the first large batch of tomato seeds turned out unsuccessful, I tried again. This time fewer seeds are planted into each pod, giving a little more room for them to grow. These grew large enough to be transplanted into pods. As well, just a few days ago, I took them outside. As of today only four are surviving. I will be watching these ones closely before planting them. The goal is to get them to grow nice and tall, if it works out. If not, this year I may not have tomatoes.
Overall, tomato plants are resilient and grow successfully, for the most part. Many people have huge tomato plants. Therefore, do not feel discouraged by what I am sharing with you. For one, I am experimenting with older seeds. Secondly, these seedlings were not strong enough to plant. Fortunately after turning out so small and frail, these few tomatoes are somehow managing to survive. It just goes to show that quantity does not equal quality.
Moreover, had each seed been given proper space and room from the start, I think the chances of survival would have been better. Already there are a few changes to take place next year when I plant inside my home.
For instance, I will have a much better system of planting and creating larger pods. Secondly, I will use one seed per pod only. Thirdly, there will be some form of cart to wheel my plants around in the sun on the main floor. Keep in mind, even though a few seeds turn out okay, we still need to plant many seeds, in case they do not grow to fruition.

As we enter into the summer in the next few weeks I will update you on the changes with these tomato plants, as well as the ones planted in the ground. There is still hope for growth during the next three to four months ahead.
In the meantime, I have decided to experiment a little with new seeds. Around my pergola I have two square boxes that have dirt in them.
Last year I put kidney beans on one side and carrots for seeds on the other. Both of them turned out nicely. This time around I am planting fresh tomato seeds in one box. In the other square I am placing old seeds we saved for planting this year. We will see what happens, if anything.
if it does not work out the first time, try again
The right side, the one with fresh tomato seeds, has some compost in there that I had. For the left side, the older seeds, I did not have anymore compost so I placed in a little soil, manure and coffee grinds. Afterwards I added a little water to both sides.
We are in the first week of June, so hopefully this works out. Even though quantity does not equal quality, for this experiment I am using all the seeds from one fresh tomato on one side. On the other side, all the old seeds I preserved are being used.
In Summary
Tomatoes are not difficult to grow. If you live in a condo and receive a decent amount of sun, you can grow tomatoes very nicely in your space. There are standing tomato plants you can buy, perhaps under $15.00. They also have upside-down tomato planters that you can use to grow as well.
Just remember that it is a good idea to plant a few extra seeds just in case some of them do not work out. I am keeping all my cups used for planting this year for 2022. This way I do not need to collect cups for next year to start seeds. I am also no longer using an egg carton for my seeds and giving an individual spot for each baby seed to grow. This is going to make a world of difference. The seeds will start in the cups.
It is evident that quantity is not as helpful as quality. I did not expect to lose my tomato seedlings but they did not have enough space to begin with. Other seeds are well now spaced out properly and growing gradully.
Another easy option to grow tomato plants, especially when you have a small space is by using upside tomato planters. Start gardening vegetables for beginners and begin to build your wealth.
