Growing Fenugreek From The Seeds

Growing Fenugreek From The Seeds

Although I have been purchasing fresh fenugreek from the grocery store, I have held fenugreek seeds in my home without even considering to grow it. Since potatoes are growing in the garden now, I decided trying to grow fenugreek from the seeds.

Growing Fenugreek From The Seeds

Place some water in each pod and let it sit in the containers for a few days

A Few Simple Steps

Take out a handful of fenugreek seeds, setting out some containers and plant 25-30 seeds into each little pod. Add just a little bit of water. After a couple of days some roots begin to sprout. As soon as this is showing you are ready to plant the seeds in soil.

At this point you can remove all the seeds from the containers. Set them aside for now. Then add some soil in each pod. About 80% to the top of the container is where you want to stop adding more soil. Place the sprouted fenugreek seeds on the surface of the dirt. Afterwards, make sure to cover them up with a little more soil so that you no longer see the seeds. Let them sit outside and watch them grow. They need a good amount of water and plenty of sun. Shortly, you will begin to see four leaf clover like leaves begin to show up.

Grows Fast & Multiple Harvests

The growing process is going to take approximately one month or a little more. I will share what the end result comes up as. You can receive three harvests with one planting of the seeds. Throughout this summer I should be able to snip the stems off three times, if possible. Due to the fact that I am starting a little late, in early July, I may not receive this much of a yield this year round, but we will see. After three yields the seeds will likely not grow anymore. They will need to be replanted the next year.

The Benefits Of Fenugreek

The benefits of eating fenugreek are several. Fenugreek is considered a superfood. It helps on the inside and outside. It benefits in lowering blood sugar levels, boosting testosterone and increasing milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Women who are breast-feeding sometimes use fenugreek to promote milk flow. Please consult your doctor or health nutritionist professional for further information as I am not qualified to help.

Add in your seeds

Additionally, men and women use fenugreek to improve sexual health. Research shows significant improvement in this area among adult women as well as pre-menopausal. Additionally it aids in improved testosterone. However, again this is something you can talk to your doctor or health care professional about.

Fenugreek may also reduce cholesterol levels, lower inflammation, and help with appetite control.

Fenurgreek For Hair Growth

Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of iron and protein which are two essential nutrients for hair growth. Also known as methi, it contains a composition of plant compounds, such as flavonoids and saponins. These compounds help induce hair growth as a result of their anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal effects.

Couple of days later, this is what shows up

There is information about methi helping reverse grey hairs. However I cannot confirm this. Despite eating fenugreek occasionally, there are no reversals in my grey hair just yet. In fact, more keep showing up everyday. Perhaps it is that I do not eat fenugreek often enough. It does not indicate how much one needs to consume in order for grey hairs to be reversed. My guess is, it must be a lot. However I did mention in my Authentic Homemade Vegetarian Cookbook that when you eat this food you smell like it. So, if you do not like the smell of fenugreek, this option may not be one for you.

At one point I made a paste out of fenugreek seeds and applied it to my hair. However, I will not do that ever again because my hair smelled like fenugreek for a week. Even after a few hair washes the smell did not go away. This is why I prefer to eat it instead of applying it as a paste in my hair.

Fenugreek is said to promote hair growth as well a reverse greys. I initially purchased the bag fenugreek seeds to make a paste for to promote hair growth. Ever since that experience, I now use other methods to grow my hair that smells much better.

Summary

Growing fenugreek from the seeds is low maintenance. It does not require much labour to sprout your seeds and have some leaves growing. I am sure you can grow this inside your home as well. As long as it is sitting in some sun, it grows very nicely.

This is just another easy seed to plant and grow some fenugreek. If you have fenugreek seeds, (one large bag is under $10.00-$13.00 for a 400-600 gram bag) you can start planting them now, in July, and they still have time to flourish. They do not take up much space to grow either, which is a bonus.

Enjoy planting and growing fenugreek.
