What Are The Results Of The Fruits Of Your Labour?

Starting From The Roots

Whether you are a green thumb or not, it is apparent that anyone can grow food in their urban garden. As a result of putting in a little effort, I ended up with a significant amount of vegetables growing in my garden. The following information shares what is showing up.

Although you may not see the fruits of your labour right away continue to stick to it. Keep trying and eventually something will grow.

Repetition makes the process of planting vegetables easier over time. However, when things do not work out, switch it up what you are planting. For example, planting in places that requires more or less sunlight or planting vegetables next to each other that help them grow stronger.

Tomatoes -The Fruits Of Your Labour

The tomato plants are now rising up. As they grow higher add longer sticks next to the plant and attach it to the stick next to it in the ground. This is so that they do not topple over and stop growing. As you add more height to a strong growing plant, it will keep getting higher.

The tomato plants have sprouted successfully. They are firm and strong. As the plants rise up a nice straight line they will need more support. Perhaps in another week or so I will add more.

White Potatoes

In the second picture, there are a bunch of green leaves hiding white potatoes under the ground. Although the leaves make it seem like something growing in the ground, you will not really know until it time for harvest.

Some potatoes are starting to peak out of the soil. This is an indication that potatoes are coming through. However, when potatoes are coming out of the ground, add more soil on top to cover it up. By the time harvest season comes around we will discover the fruits of our labour become present.

Sweet Potatoes

The sweet potato leaves are taking over the space around the pergola. Again, although I cannot see how much has come out, I assume much must be growing beneath the surface. Sweet potatoes for now seem like a good vegetable to plant.

The leaves of the sweet potato can be cut off before they turn brown, near the end of summer and used to sauté. Besides your main dish, this can be eaten as part of your side meal.

Kidney Beans

Along with the sweet potatoes, I planted some kidney beans. Although I was not sure how much it was going to produce, I tried doing it anyway. Once again, it does not seem like a lot is growing, even though you can see, there are long beans showing up. In 2021, I will plant more kidney beans based on how much of a yield comes out from what I planted this time around.

Initially, I planted 15 kidney beans only and notably, that was a minimal start. As a result, the next time I will plant around 30-50 kidney beans. Provided I have enough space, I can grow much more. I used the kidney beans from a bag of beans purchased from the grocery store to grow more beans.

In the picture below we can see that some of these beans are turning yellow. Therefore, the fruits of our labour are ready to be picked off for more to grow. Click here and scroll down to see a picture of the kidney beans that came out.

Green Peppers

Alongside other vegetables, the green peppers are slowly coming out. Even though our knowledge in growing a garden is minimal, the method of trial and error is the ultimate teacher.

This year has given me an opportunity to see what I can grow in my garden, what works and what needs improvement. Through my successes and mishaps you can skip any setbacks I had and move confidently in building a garden in your space.

Basil

Green peppers at the grocery store and tomatoes are not cheap anymore. Just a few months without having to buy this produce is worth growing it on your own.

The only plant purchased this year was two basil plants. They are large with plenty of bloomed leaves. I took the first batch off the leaves and placed them on a tray to dry. They will be used for seasoning food when cooking in the fall and winter. Basil is a delicious herb. If you have basil, start picking them off throughout the summer and adding them to meals. Basil has a nice flavour and it is good for you

Kale

Even though the kale did not work out in 2020, I learned that next time it needs to be placed in the right direction. There was not enough space for this vegetable to grow and way too much shade. Kale can handle shade but does need some sun and this location did not have enough.

Along with this, there were some bugs eating the leaves. The location in which the kale was planted was not receiving enough sunlight. Initially, I sprayed the leaves with some soap and water so that it could help stop the bugs from eating the leaves. It worked well. However, due to the lack of sun, it eventually ended up wilting.

In conclusion, the fruits of our labour show up after you have put in all the work. Before that it is all speculation of what you will receive this harvest.

Aside from sharing the start and finish, showing in-between stages is to show the duration for this to come to bloom. Each step in gardening in your backyard takes patience. Once vegetables show up the fruits of your labour are worth it.
