Learning How To Become A Green Thumb
The end of July is already here. If you planted some seeds in your garden or built an indoor garden beforehand and brought the plants outside, something is surely growing. The rewards of growing garden vegetables are many. The follow blogs shares a few main ones.
By this point in mid summer, either on your balcony or in the backyard, the garden vegetable plants are likely showing signs of growth. This is especially the case if you started as soon as the warmer temperatures hit. Everyone can learn to become a green thumb, but do not expect perfect and be okay to make mistakes along the way.
Picking Up Vegetables From Our Garden-The Rewards Of Growing Garden Vegetables
I am currently picking up produce from my backyard to make meals. Everything is fresh and delicious. Although, each year, despite the efforts that are made, we are faced with different challenges when it comes to gardening.
Be Nice To The Animals
Although there are rewards of growing garden vegetables, there are also some setbacks. This year it is the animals consistently taking food away. I lost several items this year. Kale was planted three times and all of them are gone. The same with my celery, green bell peppers, (all but one are gone) and surprisingly cilantro.
This is just one of the cute friendly visitors waking up after sprawling out like a king on the lawn. Many visitors come to hang out, eat and sleep here. My backyard is a tiny oasis with blue birds, sparrows, robins, red cardinals, squirrels, rabbits, butterflies and more to hang out.

What Are Some Things To Know About Gardening?
Maximize Your Space-City Gardening
Gardening is easy as long as it is done with care and consistency. Many seeds did not survive after being planted in the ground. Aside from animals taking away food, the plants and seeds may not make it. Some of them end up growing too close to each other in proximity and will not expand further. This results in a much smaller yield, if one at all.
Be mindful of how many items you plan to grow in your backyard. Some vegetables take up a lot of room, so give them the space to grow, or consider growing something else that is not as wide.
When It Rains It Pours
This year the water was used for a total of 10 minutes throughout the summer. Even though the summer is not yet over, consistent rainfall has been a huge factor.
Each time it rains I collect some water to use in the garden. This small trick helps the vegetables grow beautifully. When it rains it pours, so have your buckets prepared to collect the water before it comes down.
This way you are not wasting it and can pour it in your garden on hot and dry days. Not only do you save money on your water bill, the garden vegetables that are growing will grow lush and better without any added chemicals. The rewards of growing garden vegetables are that you will not spend much money to grow a successful yield.
There are about two months to go before we collect our harvest. Keep mending your garden by collecting rain water and watering on hot, dry and humid days.
Using A Natural Compost
Collecting the remains of fruits and vegetables for your crops that would usually end up going in the garbage is a great way for the produce to grow better. The plants need natural compost because it is rich in nutrients. This easy method of adding compost is a great boost and will add a boon to the garden. Despite animals coming in and going after several of my plants, for the vegetable plants that remain I added compost and noticed a big difference in their growth within one week.
In Summary-Garden Vegetables
The rewards of growing garden vegetables are many. Aside from learning how to become a green thumb, you eat delicious organic food, save money and have a beautiful garden.
Keep at it with your garden while you can before harvest season. Since the beginning of this process till now I have spent very little money on my garden. It is not expensive to have your own fresh homegrown produce in the heart of the city. I will be back again to share more soon.
