We may not be experts when it comes to fixing items in our home. Many of us do not use tools around our house to fix broken things. When we need help to have something fixed in our home, sometimes the help is there, but the tools are not. With tools available in times of need, someone can help us out without. Most people do not carry their tools with them. For those of us who fix, the majority of you have at least five of these items in your home today.
Number 1 -Hammer
For those of us who have a home, without a doubt, you need a hammer. You use a hammer for closing a paint can, nailing your calendar, putting up wall paintings, pulling nails out of the wall or floor. Ultimately, a hammer is a handy tool to have around. If you plan to renovate anything in your space, you need to use a hammer for it. Are you planning to buy furniture or other items for your home? You need a measuring tape. If you are looking the exact measurements, you cannot go without a measuring tape. For example, measuring the centre of your wall to put up a painting is just one of the reasons you will need one. Moreover, you need to know what the measurements are in order to buy the proper size furniture for your space. 
A measuring tape is a very useful and inexpensive tool. My kitchen is an odd shape. One day I will share how using a measuring tape helped me create something in this space beautifully. Without a measuring tape this personal project is impossible.
Number 3-Saw not Axe
For city dwellers like you and me, we do not need an axe. An axe is used for splitting firewood and cutting down trees. We are not doing any of that. For us, we need a saw. This tool is important to have because we use it for cutting wood and making cuts.

If you do not have an electric saw, (which is better to have), then you can still use a handheld saw to cut 2×4 lumber or any kind of home renovation style lumber. Purchase a standard hand saw (panel saw) for approximately $20.00.
Number 4-Compound Mitre Saw
For a handy person around the house who has the funds to invest in one, buy a mitre saw. Anyone who is interested in building anything, having a compound mitre saw is of great value.
For any renovations in your home, a mitre saw helps give you proper cuts. For example, when I shared making changes like crown moulding, a mitre saw was used to make the cuts. If you plan on changing your baseboards, doors and window trims and anything related to fine carpentry including redoing your floors, whether laminate or hardwood you need a wood cutting saw mitre.
Number 5-Paint Brush, Painting tools
Out of all the renovations we make, the biggest impact tools to your space are painting tools. They make the most difference in changing a room to look better thank before. Painting your walls is a common upgrade that everyone in their home is able to do and needs to do from time to time. Painting tools are a great investment because you will be painting your walls at some point. We have painting tools since living in our condo.
Painting tools are a necessity, especially if you are in a home right now with scratched up walls. Re-painting them makes a world of difference. This is why we use this tool to upgrade our space. 7. Set of Screw Drivers
If you do not need a full set a screw drivers, there are a few specific screw drivers to consider having: Flat, Phillips and #2 Robertson are the basics. A set of screw drivers range anywhere between $14.99-$39.99. Screw drivers are used for several purposes. For example, a screw driver is handy when tightening in your cupboard handles properly when they come loose. You need a screw driver.
8. Pliers
Do you need to remove any nails? Using pliers does the trick. Pliers work great for removing nails from the floor or walls. Pliers are used to pinch, grab, pull.
It is also used for light duty hammering and to hold things together as you are attaching them. Generally, they are intended to twist things together. For example, twisting wires. If you have nails in your walls and plan to paint, using pliers help remove them.
9. Utility Knife
There are endless uses to a utility knife. A utility knife serves to open boxes. For example, from packages you receive in the mail, items shipped to your home. You can use it around the house, to cut plastic tarp or plastic coverings for renovations or pulling out carpet, etc. Just make sure it is sharp and that when you make any cut, you cut away from yourself.
10. Ladder
Not to be able to reach your drinking glasses at the top of your kitchen cupboard shelf is one issue, but a ladder, in general, is needed for so many things. For those of you with hanging baskets outside, you may need a ladder to water your flowers outside. I certainly do.
Additionally when you choose to removing your popcorn ceiling, you need a ladder. When you are painting, a ladder must be used to reach the top parts of the wall. A ladder is a useful tool to have in your home.
There are so many times I need a ladder. For instance, when cleaning the chandelier in our front foyer, I stand on a few steps to remove he dust each crystal ball. Without a ladder, I cannot do this simple task. Most peoples’ needs are adequately met with a 6ft aluminum A-frame ladder.
Ladder safety is key:
1. Never lean an A-frame ladder against a wall and climb it because it can slide out from under you.
2. Always maintain 3-point contact and never over-extend your reach.
3. Visually inspect your ladder before you using it to make sure that it does not have obvious damage to the rails and rungs.
4. If you need to stand on the second last rung or the top of the ladder to reach what you need to reach then the ladder you have is too short and you need to get a taller ladder.
Hopefully you are able to use this information and apply it for yourselves, especially for those in a home. Even if you cannot use a screwdriver, make sure you have one in your home. All these tools in this list are at risk of rising in cost. Find the best deals. When you find something that you need and it is at a sale price, buy it. I am seeing inflation in a lot of small things. Therefore as we all have our priorities, make your list of items you know you need and use and will last a long time.
