Growing A Lemon Plant From Seed-Making Small Steps

At the start of this decade I started growing a lemon plant from the seed, planting four seeds in a plastic yogurt container. The seeds were taken out from one lemon purchased from the grocery store. At first it seemed like a small simple planting project and it grew slowly. This all began in 2020 shortly after lockdown. It took some time before three of the seeds sprouted.

Effortless Growth

The first two years was showing just basic slow and steady growth. However, by the third year in 2023 I noticed a huge growth spurt in the plant. I transferred the plant into a larger pot and it grew almost 2 feet. Since that time until today the lemon plant is well above 5 feet tall. I am considering what do with a full grown lemon plant that is turning into a tree.

As of yet there are no lemons showing up. It can take up to five years before anything comes out although some can show within a year. Its height is reaching closer to the ceiling. By its 6th or 7th year it will likely touch it. 

How To Care For A Lemon Plant In The Winter In North America?

Protect The Plant From The Cold

Each year in the fall I bring the lemon plant inside the house to receive sunlight indoors and stay warm. In spring it goes out in the backyard to flourish. At some point the size of this plant will need to be cut down. If you want it to last, a lemon tree cannot withstand the Canadian cold climate outside.

Do not leave it in the cold during the fall and winter. Lemon plants like warmth and sunlight. This plant flourishes in a well lit high ceiling house that receives a lot of brightness. When it grows too tall start pruning it to stop it from growing taller.  Prune the plant in early spring or after the last frost. Snip off any sprouts growing from the trunk. Also, remove any unhealthy wood and yellow leaves.

Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist. If the leaves are turning yellow, check the nutrients and water levels.

For those of you who live in homes and condos that have a lot of sunlight and high ceilings, this is an easy plant to grow indoors. In this room I do not have a high ceiling while in another room I do. However that place is too dark and sunlight is essential for the plant to grow.

You can now grow lemons and enjoy lemon based drinks and food from it. It is one less produce item to purchase from the grocery store growing your own fresh organic lemons at home. Your house will smell lemony fresh and clean and you will no longer need all purpose cleaning products to cleanse your space. Lemon peels are great to disperse in a garden to ward off cats. Lemons can be used on your skin as it helps fights wrinkles. It is also a natural exfoliant. 

Growing a lemon plant helps nourish the earth, the environment, adds more greenery and nature into your life as well as it is beautiful and easy to manage. 

Growing a lemon planet successfully makes you a self-sufficient and useful person. People will benefit from your work. Now you are able to barter and trade if that day happens to come upon us. With the way this economy is and the lack of accountability for high debts, it is likely going to result in future bartering. This is a good item to invest in. If you live in a nice hot climate, growing a lemon tree will be passed down generation after generation.

You can make lemon desserts and drinks. Additionally, lemon based savoury foods like corn on the cob with lemon and spices and roasted vegetables with lemon seasoning is delicious. Lemons are often used for face masks and other skin care products. Plus, lemons are used in household cleaning products and warding off animals from your vegetable garden.

Lemons are sometimes hard to find at a good price. Each lemon in the grocery store costs nowadays is about $1.00 each. Long before I learned how much lemons will become a popular topic of discussion I started growing my own lemon plant at home. 

Now the subject of growing lemons has surfaced in a dialogue of a recent t.v. show. I thought since I started growing lemons, why not bring it up? Lemon references have been coming out all over the place ever since I started growing lemons. It was only after watching this show that I realized how much the subject of lemons was on others minds.

This show is rated R18+. It is graphic and gory. However, the show is related to 2020 and beyond. Some parts of the show are important to point out because it pays close attention to the lengths we will go to earn money. How many immoral and illegal loopholes will we commit in order to reach the pinnacle of success? Is it even success at that point after we have thrown everyone else around us under the bus to make it there?

What we will do for money and what acts will we commit to have it? How many people will we hurt, steal, rob from, lie to, destroy their lives just to get rich? The t.v show is intense to say the least. I do not want to tell you what the show is about although I just did, but my words do no justice compared to the images and the storyline of the show. It is probably best for you to watch it yourself. I am well over 18+ and traumatized by some of the scenes I saw so this is my caution to you. Watch at your own risk.

You write a line of genetic code that makes the lemons look just a little more like “… “ and you get a gene patent for the “-“lemon DNA sequence, you cross-pollinate… you get those seeds circulating in the wild, and then you sue the farmer for copyright infringement when that genetic code shows up on their land. Sit back, rake in the millions, and then, when you’re done, and you’ve sold your lem-pire for a few billion dollars, then, and then, you make some lemonade.

Wealth Is Everywhere

The characters in the show are rich but they are not happy. The lengths they go to make money are similar to the lengths some people in our world will go to do the same. They do not care who they hurt in the process. Even after some people have it all they are still miserable and totally unhappy.

Doing something as simple as growing a lemon tree is one good step to create a long-term investment. Build your assets by becoming self-sufficient and growing your own lemon tree, for example. If you have the space, perhaps you can grow an apple, cherry, apricot, or pear tree as well. Anything is possible and we can make our world with our own hands. 

Self-sufficiency is the best way to invest in yourself and become an invaluable asset for others.
